Mechanical Seals vs. Packing: Which Sealing Method to Choose

Every centrifugal pump has to seal the point where the rotating shaft passes through the stationary casing. The two dominant approaches — mechanical seals and compression packing — each suit different situations.
Compression packing is rings of braided material compressed around the shaft by a gland. It is inexpensive, easy to service in the field, and forgiving of the occasional upset. The trade-off is that packing is designed to leak slightly for lubrication and cooling, and it needs periodic adjustment. For water and non-hazardous fluids where a few drips are acceptable, packing is hard to beat on cost.
Mechanical seals use two ultra-flat faces — one rotating, one stationary — held together to create a near-zero-leakage barrier. They run cleaner, waste less product, and are the right call for hazardous, expensive, or regulated fluids. In exchange they cost more up front and are less tolerant of dry running and abrasives.
A practical way to decide: if the fluid is dangerous, costly, or leakage is unacceptable, specify a mechanical seal. If it is benign and you value low cost and simple field service, packing still earns its keep. When you rebuild, it is also a good moment to reconsider — many older packed pumps are good candidates for a seal conversion.
