Materials of Construction: Matching Pump Metallurgy to Your Fluid

The fastest way to shorten a pump's life is to put the wrong materials in contact with the fluid. Matching the wetted parts — casing, impeller, shaft, and seals — to your chemistry is a core part of every good selection.

Cast iron is the workhorse for clean water and neutral fluids. It is strong and economical, but it corrodes in aggressive or salty service. Bronze-fitted construction adds corrosion resistance at wear surfaces and suits many water and mild-chemical duties.

Stainless steel — 316 and its cousins — handles a broad range of chemicals, higher temperatures, and sanitary applications where cleanliness matters. It costs more but pays off in corrosive or hygienic service like food, pharma, and many process fluids.

For the harshest chemistries, engineered plastics and lined pumps (PVDF, PTFE, polypropylene) resist acids and solvents that would eat metal. Sealless magnetic-drive designs in these materials are common where leakage simply cannot be tolerated.

Do not forget the elastomers and seal faces — an o-ring or diaphragm in the wrong compound fails long before the metal does. Tell us the fluid, its concentration, and its temperature, and we will match a materials package that lasts.
