Centrifugal vs. Positive Displacement: A Practical Guide

The single most common pump-selection question is also one of the most important: centrifugal or positive displacement?
Centrifugal pumps use a spinning impeller to add energy to the fluid. They shine at high flow rates and thin, clean liquids, and their output naturally varies with system pressure. If you are moving water or similar low-viscosity fluids, a centrifugal pump is usually the efficient, economical choice.
Positive displacement pumps trap a fixed volume and force it through the discharge. They deliver near-constant flow regardless of pressure, and they handle viscous, shear-sensitive, or metered fluids far better. Diaphragm, gear, peristaltic, and progressive-cavity pumps all fall in this family.
A quick rule of thumb: if viscosity is high, flow must be precise, or pressure varies widely, lean positive displacement. Otherwise, start with centrifugal and refine from there.
